Embrace the Power Within
It is only possible to shift out of a situation once you consciously recognize that you are creating your own experience of life. You are not a victim of anything or anyone; you are a powerful creator. Our culture teaches us that things will always be unfair due to that mysterious occurrence called our “lot in life.” But we must recognize that the cultural norm does not need to be our experience. We create our own experience and our own reality.
Up to this point, your life experience may have been based on the beliefs of those around you, beliefs you have unconsciously absorbed or taken for granted. But those are just thoughts playing in your mind like a scratched record that plays the same tune over and over.
From a neurological perspective, the thoughts you have about yourself and your life are nothing more than electrical pulses traveling along cellular pathways in your brain. These pulses and pathways have been created by your body to transfer and assimilate information. Because you have been
thinking the same thoughts over and over, these biological structures are very well established. For most of us, they have become the default way to think about particular subjects. That is why it may seem that a more positive thought does not seem true at first: because it contradicts your established neural system. Despite that feeling, stay with the more positive thoughts. Every new thought changes your brain by wiring it differently. Every new thought changes your perspective. Every new thought creates a new reality. Every new thought allows you to become more the person you desire to be.
You have skillfully designed every aspect your life. Now that you are aware of your themes, you are free to choose to try something else. The world does not need to change in order for you to begin feeling better about your life. Instead, focus on transforming your inner world. Trust that, in time, the outside will reflect the changes happening within you.
Become aware of your beliefs. Begin examining them and allowing for new and more supportive thoughts to replace the old ones. You have that power in you. You have the power to change. You are the master of your universe. There is such a profound sense of empowerment and a feeling of belonging when this point of view becomes your outlook on life.
Most of us create “by default”; we don’t know we’re creating, so we are not able to make conscious choices about what we create. Even “default” creation is a valuable experience. It teaches us that there is something else we would prefer. We are free in this moment to claim, choose, and become—in our thoughts, deeds, and actions—the people we want to be.
Again, true power exists in the present moment, where we create who we choose to be as well as our past and future. It is only in the present moment that we can experience life. As we have explored in this book, the consecutive evolution of events that we think of as “time” is but an illusion—a convenient construct. Our thinking mind, our ego, which is so intensely focused on physical existence, uses it as an organizing tool.
Memories are also created in the present moment. Memories are nothing but thoughts you are thinking in the now. The memories you choose to experience and the way you choose to experience those “prior” events are determined by the present perceptions you hold in your mind and the current beliefs you have about who you are. The things around you—relationships, objects, events—are nothing but neutral occurrences. Nothing in life has an assigned value. It is your interpretation, which is based on your beliefs, that gives circumstances meaning.
You are the one with the power to assign your own subjective values to things based on your unique thinking. For example, a photo of a steak will make some of us salivate and crave a delicious piece of meat. Others, perhaps those of us who believe in veganism, will find the photo repulsive; it will represent everything we stand against. The values of the observer give the same photo the label “good” or “bad.”
Similarly, the circumstances in your life are neutral events. It is you who has supplied the “good” and the “bad” labels. Ask yourself, “How did it benefit me to experience these certain negative events in my life?” Every situation is an opportunity to learn—even if the lesson is that you don’t want to learn about yourself in that way again! Knowing that every situation is neutral, you can make an intentional decision to note the benefits you have derived from every experience, and then decide the new way in which you are choosing to tell your story. Emphasize the benefits you have experienced and the
upsides you gained. By taking this approach—interpreting everything as a positive—you will no longer feel marginalized and self-pitying. After all, no winner is a victim.
You are the storyteller of your life. How would you like your story to be told?
Exercise: How to Break the Bonds of Prior Limitations
I would like to introduce a powerful process that allows for rapid transformation. It will assist you in easily breaking the bonds of prior limitations. This exercise is very helpful, not only for those who are in a challenging place but also for those who are seeking to transform their beliefs about any aspect of life—including self-worth, money, or relationships. You can do this exercise with a therapist or with a trusted friend. You can read the text into a recorder so that you can play it back for yourself. Or you can simply read through the instructions and guide yourself through the process while in a meditative state. Allow your intuition to determine the best way for you to do this exercise, and use your imagination freely. Be sure to give yourself at least 20 minutes of uninterrupted time to complete it.
Assume a comfortable position and close your eyes. After taking a few slow, deep, relaxing breaths, imagine that you’re a little baby in your mother’s womb. See yourself as the perfect creation that you are. Feel how warm and safe it is to be in your mother’s belly. Feel your Divine essence and know that you are nurtured, loved, and always provided for. You have everything you need. Then, allow your imagination to take you through your birth, the way you desire for your birth to have been. Feel what it would be like to take your first breath of air. Imagine what it would feel like to be welcomed into this world with great anticipation, love, and excitement.
Use your imagination to see what it would be like to have the childhood you would like to have had. Be the child who becomes the adult you would like to be now. Do not censor your imagination with restraints about what it was really like, or any other limitations. Paint everything in your head in the best possible light.
How would your parents treat you? Would you like for any events to have unfolded differently? Are there events that would have needed to take place, or those that never would have happened? What truths would your parents and teachers impart to you? Would you like for your family to have more or less money, or to live in different places? Where would you go to school? Would you like to have different friends?
Imagine how this new child, this new you, would be taught about your value and self-worth. What kind of beliefs would you like this child to have about love, relationships, money, work, and everything else? Give the child these new ideas and ways of being. This child trusts you and absorbs what you’re teaching as the absolute truth. Feel how these new ways of knowing yourself are permanently imprinted in the energetic and cellular structures of this beautiful child.
See this child grow up and become an adult. See this adult as the ideal version of you. Who do you grow up to be? What is your most fulfilled, most happy life like? What is different about this version of you? How does this version live life?
Next, imagine that the ideal version of you and who you are today are drawn toward one another. Feel the ideal you merging into the current you—feel the two becoming one. Feel as you would feel as this new, ideal you. Feel your vibration rise. Revel in this energy, knowing that this is who you now are. This is a new reality and this is the new
you. Commit to living as the new version of yourself.
Within yourself, you contain this child. You’ve shifted to a reality where you had this child’s past. Know that you have now restructured the idea of your childhood. You are now free to speak and act as the adult version of that child. Know that there is nothing from your past to hold you back. Choose your preferred past. The past is created in the present. You create a new present—you create the life of the ideal you—by creating a new past. Choose a past that will support your ideal present, one where you are living your dreams.
By doing this exercise you will enter an altered brain-wave state, a state of hypnosis. Just like my clients, you will come out of this trance state feeling different, as though you are a different person. You will feel lighter. You will feel more optimistic, as if there were less weight on your shoulders and more room to breathe. Through this process you will give yourself permission to become your greatest potential—the true you, the most creative, expressive, and joyful you. Stay with this feeling. Allow it to be encoded in every cell of your body as your new vibration. Trust it, act on it, and from this energy place build upon it the life you would like to have.
If the thought, But it isn’t real! pops into your head, remember all that you have learned in this book about your possible selves and other parallel realities. Remind yourself that you are the storyteller of your life, and “real” is a very subjective experience. There are many different versions of every possible reality, and each is “real” to those experiencing it. I’m not encouraging you to weave a web of lies to tell your friends; I am encouraging you to change your energy, your alignment, your attitudes, and your beliefs. I’m encouraging you to free yourself and experience your life in the way that pleases you. Just because something didn’t occur in the life you know and remember does not mean that you cannot derive value from it. You need only experience yourself in a different way. You can switch to a parallel reality where you are that person. The only permission you need to live a fulfilling life is your own. Give yourself that permission. Change is that easy.
