The Meaning of Karma
Karma is a representation of the soul’s desire for balance in its experiences. It represents the soul’s quest to learn from different perspectives. Every soul grows in understanding by experiencing existence from different points of view. These different perspectives could be lived through one life, with a person going from poor to rich, for example. Or it could happen over many lifetimes, such as a person experiencing the theme of abundance in its different variations.
There is no judgment in karma; it is not punitive. It is not imposed upon you from the outside—it’s simply the Oversoul’s desire for balance in its learning. If your soul feels the need to balance its energies based on prior experiences—whether in the same life or in another—you will find the most appropriate way to achieve that balance. The result is what we call karma. Every action creates an outcome. When you experience the resulting effect, you can evaluate it and decide whether that’s the outcome you prefer. If so, you have learned about a preference you have. If, on the other hand, the effect is displeasing to you, you simply need to make the choice to act differently the next time.
Sadly, we have applied a sense of judgment to the term karma. This gives us yet another way to play small, to play the victim. It is ironic, because you alone have the power to free yourself from the effects of karma. The commonly held concept of karma as payback for old debts is false. Balancing the negative energies and experiences you’ve created does not mean that you need to experience negativity. You can choose to have a conscious recognition of your desire to balance your life, and you can then take positive actions that will allow you to balance the situation as it is. Know that you are free to choose who you are. With every choice, you are directing your experience. You are growing and expanding with every step you take, in the direction you prefer. You are free to be who you want to be, and to experience life as that person.
We ourselves are the only ones who are judging how well we do in our incarnations. There is no one “up there” keeping score. We live to our own satisfaction. We take on a life because we are eager to be more, to experience more, and to create more. It is our joy to be of service through the very existence of our lives.
